Transcript for Treestand Safety Hunting Incident Review

Steve: If you chose “All of the above,” you are correct. As you saw on the video, the second hunter was mistaken for a deer, and it may have cost him his life. There are a few things that occurred which led to this incident. Let’s take a closer look.

The first error was that the second hunter removed his blaze orange hat while in very tall grass. This made him significantly less noticeable. In addition, we know that the first hunter was feeling tired after being out all morning. Therefore, he had a harder time maintaining attention. The second hunter also was not aware of the other hunter’s presence up in the tree. But the most significant error was that the first hunter failed to properly identify his target.

If the hunters had taken the necessary precautions by keeping their blaze orange gear on, being aware of their surroundings, and making their presence known, their time in the field would have been safer and would not have resulted in a hunting incident.

Congratulations! You’ve made it through the final scenario and have now completed your fourth hunt day of the virtual field day.
