Father and daughter posing with an antelope

Every hunter wants to bring home the game he or she is seeking; true conservationists strive to do it by inflicting a minimal amount of suffering.

To achieve these twin goals, it is essential that you understand the anatomy of the game you are after and learn how to place a shot for a quick, clean kill. It is also critical to match your cartridge and bullet to the game you are hunting, which should ensure adequate penetration and bullet performance (shock and tissue damage).

A recent trend has been to use bullets and calibers that are “light” for the hunted game. While a well-placed shot in the heart and lungs may still kill the animal, a bullet that misses the mark a little, may not give the same penetration and destructive force that a larger cartridge/bullet would give.

An article posted on the MeatEater website titled “Shot Placement for Big Game” by Steven Rinella in October 2017 gives a great breakdown of various shots: https://www.themeateater.com/hunt/big-game/shot-placement-for-biggame/.
