Do you need to take the Montana Wolf Trapper Education Course?

To purchase a wolf trapping license in Montana, residents must meet one of two education requirements:

  • Complete the general trapper education course, which includes wolf-specific training or...
  • Take the stand-alone wolf trapper education course if they have held a trapping license for at least three seasons before 2022.

Nonresidents are required to complete a wolf trapper education course offered in either Montana or Idaho.

Is my Montana Wolf Trapping Course Completion Certificate accepted elsewhere?

Some U.S. states, provinces, and other countries that have mandatory hunter education requirements will accept the Wolf Trapping Course Completion Certificate. (This is known as “reciprocity.”) Students are advised to check with their state or the state where they will be trapping to ensure acceptance and that all trapper education requirements are met.

Do I have to take an online exam?

The Final Exam, for the online portion, is the exam you take at the end of the online course. You must score at least 80% on the exam to pass. You have unlimited attempts to pass the exam. If you don’t complete the exam in one session, don’t worry. When you log in later, you will be taken to the first unanswered question of the exam.

Once you pass the Final Exam and pay for the Wolf Trapping Course Completion Certificate, you will be able to immediately print out the Wolf Trapping Course Completion Certificate. This is your proof of online course completion. You can print the Wolf Trapping Course Completion Certificate right then, and/or request that a PDF be emailed to you.
