Study the free online course material to provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to learn to be a safe and responsible hunter in Virginia. For a $24.50 course fee, you will then be able to complete Virginia's classroom requirement.
Residential Requirement You must be a resident of Virginia to take the online course.
Complete Age-Dependent Certification Requirements
If you are 18 years of age or older, you must complete and pass all the unit quizzes. Passing the unit quizzes will complete your Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries hunter education requirement.
If you are under 18 years of age, to complete the Virginia hunter education requirements, you must pass both the online and in-person Basic Hunter Education Course portions of the hunter education course. Learn more about the Basic Hunter Education Course.
Receive Your Virginia Hunter Education Certificate
If you are 18 years of age or older, after passing the unit quizzes, you'll immediately print out your Hunter Education Certificate, which serves as your permanent certificate. Your Hunter Education Certificate allows you to legally purchase a hunting license in Virginia.
If you are under 18 years of age, after attending and passing the required Basic Hunter Education Course, which includes practical firearm handling exercises and ethical discussions, you will receive your permanent Hunter Education Certificate from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.Ready? Study the Course Content
This official training program is developed to meet the standards for hunter training established by the International Hunter Education Association (IHEA-USA).
Read each unit. The units are organized to form building blocks of information. Each unit will help you understand the information in the next units.
This official training program will provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to be a safe and responsible hunter in Virginia.
Pass the Course, Ages 18+
If you are 18 years of age or older, you'll be given the opportunity to demonstrate how well you're understanding the hunter safety topics by taking a quiz at the end of each unit.
You'll need to score 90% or greater on the unit quiz before moving on to the next unit. If you don't pass a unit quiz, that's no problem. You'll just go back and take the quiz as many times as you need to pass it.
After passing the online quizzes you will have met the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries hunter education requirement.
Pass the Course, Ages Less Than 18
If you are under 18 years of age, you'll be given the opportunity to demonstrate how well you're understanding the hunter safety topics by taking a quiz at the end of each unit.
You'll need to score 80% or greater on the unit quiz before moving on to the next unit. If you don't pass a unit quiz, that's no problem. You'll just go back and take the quiz as many times as you need to pass it.
For those under 18 years of age, after passing the online quizzes, mandatory attendance at the Virginia Basic Hunter Education Course is the required second step.
After Passing the Online Course…
After passing the online course, students under 18 years of age are required to attend the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Basic Hunter Education Course to complete your hunter education certification.
