How Do I Get My Hunter Education Card in Montana?

The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Department (FWPoffers three options to meet hunter safety certification requirements. Even though hunter education is only required for hunters born after January 1, 1985it's highly recommended for hunters of all ages.

1. Take an In-Person Instructor-Led Class

Anyone 10 or older can take a free instructor-led course. Students ages 10–11 can take an in-person course and hunt as an apprentice, but they won’t be fully certified until they turn 12.

Choose a course date and time that works for your schedule and pre-register. Be sure to complete the course a few weeks before hunting season begins, so you have plenty of time to get your hunter education card and hunting license.

2. Take an Online Course (Ages 18 and Up)

Hunters ages 18 and older can opt to take an online hunter safety course to get certified completely online. For online courses, no in-person field day is required for hunters ages 18 or older (though FWP encourages it).

Hunters ages 12–17 and students who will turn 12 by January 16 of the current license year (March–February) may take the course online, but they are required to also complete an in-person field day.

Hunter-Ed is proud to be an approved online hunter education course for Montana! It's the most convenient way to meet the state's hunter education requirement.

After completing the coursework and passing the final exam online, hunters ages 18 and older can immediately print a hunter education certificate. You'll need this to buy your hunting license.

3. Take a Hybrid Course (Ages 12–17)

Along with completing the online course, young hunters are required to attend an in-person field day to finish their certification. During this field day, participants must demonstrate their knowledge of the four rules of firearm safety, proper landowner relations and hunting ethics, animal identification, and other essential skills.

After successfully passing the online course’s final exam, print your hunter education certificate and bring it with you to the in-person field day.

Choose a day and time to complete your certification through one of the state's field day sessions. These sessions typically last a few hours. After completing both the online course and the field day, you'll receive your hunter education certificate.

Why Hunter Education Is Important

Before you grab your tag or hike into the timbered ridges and river bottoms of Montana, it’s worth taking the time to enroll in a hunter education course. Whether this is your first hunting season or you’ve spent years pursuing elk, deer, and upland birds across Big Sky Country, hunter education can sharpen your awareness and keep you aligned with modern hunting practices.

Hunter education in Montana focuses on the fundamentals that matter most when you’re out hunting:

  • Safe and responsible firearm handling
  • Clear, ethical judgment
  • Smart decision-making in real-world hunting scenarios

The instruction is practical and focused, designed to protect you, your hunting partners, landowners, and anyone else enjoying hunting in Montana. The objective is simple: everyone returns home safely after a day in the field.

Along with core safety principles, the course builds skills useful in Montana’s rugged landscapes. You’ll learn how to navigate forested mountains and open valleys, prepare for rapidly changing weather, apply basic first aid, and stay calm when conditions shift. The training also highlights respect for private property, cooperation with other hunters, and appreciation for the wildlife that defines Montana’s strong hunting heritage.

Ultimately, hunter education is about responsibility and stewardship. It encourages hunters to conserve wildlife populations, respect long-standing traditions, and help ensure that future generations can continue enjoying healthy, sustainable hunting seasons across Montana.

Why are a State-Specific Hunter Education Courses Important?

Most states honor hunter education certificates issued elsewhere, and Montana generally follows that same practice. If you’ve successfully completed an approved hunter education course in another state, your certification will often be recognized when you plan a hunt in Montana.

Minnesota Department of Natural Resources logo.

That’s welcome news for visiting hunters who don’t want to repeat the same safety course every time they travel to a new state to hunt.

However, if you’re preparing to hunt in Montana (especially if it’s your first season in Montana) it can still be worthwhile to take a course that focuses specifically on this state. Montana-centered training explains the details that make hunting here different, and those distinctions can be more important than many hunters realize.

A class from another state may not cover Montana’s season structures, tagging and validation requirements, harvest reporting expectations, public land access rules, or state-specific safety regulations. These are the types of details that matter when you’re deep in the mountains before daylight or making sure your harvest is tagged correctly before leaving the field.

Even if you already hold a valid certificate from another state, completing Montana’s hunter education course can be a smart step. It helps ensure you understand the rules, make informed choices in the field, and respect the strong hunting traditions that are part of Montana’s outdoor heritage.
