Course Outline

Snares are cable devices deployed in water sets for beavers and river otters.

  • Native vegetation, rocks, limbs, and other natural debris may be used to funnel the target animal into the snare.
  • Snares are typically anchored by securing the cable to a tree, root, or limb. They may also be anchored with steel stakes and earth anchors, if necessary.
  • Support wires can be used to hold a snare in the proper position to capture a beaver or river otter.
    • A 9- to 12-gauge wire should be used for the support wire. If a cable support collar is installed on the cable, the collar is placed over the wire. If not, the wire is bent in a way that supports the cable loop.
    • Smaller diameter wire may also be used to support the loop if there is a nearby structure where the support wire can be attached.
