Course Outline

To make a coyote set, follow these steps.

  1. Select a suitable site that is free from objects that could cause entanglement. Also try to place the set to limit incidental captures of non-target species.
  2. Attach the cable restraint to an anchor point by securing it to an immovable object, steel anchor stakes, or earth anchors. Ensure that the anchor is solid enough to withstand an animal pulling against it with all four legs.
  3. Check carefully for entanglements again after the cable restraint is anchored. Ideally, the cable restraint, when fully closed, should be 12 inches away from the nearest source of entanglement when stretched to its fullest extent.
  4. Insert a length of 9-gauge wire into the ground and secure the cable restraint to this support wire.
  5. Insert the support wire into the support collar by rotating the collar around the wire. If the cable does not have a support collar, use lineman’s pliers to cut and bend the wire to create a support.
  6. Open the loop of the cable restraint to a diameter of 10 to 12 inches.
  7. Adjust the support wire until the bottom of the cable restraint is 10 to 12 inches above the ground to maximize the chance of capture.
  8. Place the lock at either the 1 o’clock or 11 o’clock position to load the cable loop properly.
