To understand the hunting requirements in Nebraska, you need to know the terminology used to refer to the different wildlife groups. Game species in Nebraska include upland game, waterfowl, turkey, big game, and furbearers.

Upland game is either non-migratory or migratory.

The non-migratory species that may be hunted are:

  • Birds
    • Grouse, including Prairie Chicken and Sharp-Tailed Grouse
    • Partridge
    • Pheasant
    • Quail
  • Mammals
    • Cottontail Rabbit
    • Coyote
    • Jackrabbit
    • Porcupine
    • Prairie Dog
    • Squirrel
    • Woodchuck

The migratory bird species that may be hunted are:

  • Crow
  • Dove
  • Rail
  • Snipe
  • Woodcock
