How Do I Get My Hunter Education Card in Oregon?

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) offers two options to meet hunter safety certification requirements.

1. Take an In-Person Instructor-Led Class

Hunters can take an in-person instructor-led course for a $10 fee. The course takes 14–16 hours to complete in multiple sessions and includes a multiple-choice written exam and a field day.

Choose a course date and time that works for your schedule, then pre-register. Be sure to complete the course a few weeks before hunting season begins, so you have plenty of time to get your hunter education card and hunting license.

2. Take a Hybrid Course (Under Age 18)

Hunters can opt to complete part of their hunter safety training online. For online courses, an in-person field skills evaluation is still required.

Hunter-Ed is proud to be an approved online hunter education course for Oregon! It's the most convenient way to get your hunter education training before attending a field skills evaluation.

After completing the coursework and passing the final exam online, hunters can immediately print an exam certificate. You'll need to bring the certificate to your in-person field skills evaluation course.

Passing the online course does not guarantee you a spot at a field day. Schedule a day and time to complete your certification through one of the state's field skills evaluation sessions. Sessions generally last 4–6 hours. After completing both the online course and the field day, you'll receive a permanent certification card in the mail.

Why Hunter Education Is Important

Before heading out with a tag in Oregon, completing a hunter education course is a smart step. Whether you're getting ready for your first hunting season or you've spent years pursuing elk, blacktail deer, waterfowl, or upland birds, the course offers a useful refresher on safe and responsible hunting practices.

Oregon's hunter education program focuses on the practical knowledge and decision-making hunters rely on in the field, including:

  • Safe, confident firearm handling
  • Sound, ethical choices
  • Smart judgment in real-world hunting situations

The training is practical and applicable to real-world conditions, helping protect hunters, landowners, and anyone else who shares Oregon's outdoors. The central goal is simple: ensuring every hunter returns home safely after a day in the field.

Beyond core safety principles, the course also prepares hunters for Oregon's varied landscapes. You'll learn how to move safely through dense forests and rugged mountain terrain, along with basic first aid and how to deal with rapid changes in your environment. The training emphasizes respect for private property, cooperation with other hunters, and appreciation for Oregon's wildlife.

At its core, hunter education is about stewardship. It encourages hunters to help conserve wildlife populations, respect the traditions of the sport, and ensure that Oregon's hunting opportunities remain strong for future generations.

Why are a State-Specific Hunter Education Courses Important?

Most states accept hunter education certificates earned elsewhere, and Oregon generally follows that same practice. If you've successfully completed an approved hunter education course in another state, your certification will usually be valid when you plan to hunt in Oregon.

For hunters who travel between states, this is helpful news. It means you typically won't need to repeat the same basic safety course every time you cross a state line to hunt.

Still, hunters preparing for their first season in Oregon may benefit from taking a course designed specifically for the state. Oregon-focused training highlights local regulations, landscapes, and hunting practices that programs from other states might not cover.

For instance, an out-of-state class may not go into detail about Oregon specifics. Understanding these details is important whether you're pursuing elk in the Cascades or exploring the open country of eastern Oregon.

Before relying entirely on certification from another state, it may be worthwhile to complete an Oregon-based hunter education course. Doing so can help you better understand local rules, hunt responsibly, and take part in the traditions that support Oregon's long-standing hunting heritage.
