How Do I Get My Hunter Education Card in Michigan?

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) offers three ways to meet hunter safety certification requirements.

1. Take a Traditional In-Person Course (Includes Field Day)

Hunters of any age can take an entirely in-person course, though students under age 10 must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or other adult approved by them.

This course includes hands-on training, and it takes a minimum of 10 hours over at least two days. It also includes a Field Day, which Michigan requires for all its hunter safety course options (classroom or online).

2. Take an Online Course with a Field Day

Hunters can opt to complete part of their hunter safety training online. An in-person Field Day is still required.

Hunter-Ed is proud to be an approved online hunter education course for Michigan! It's the most convenient way to get your hunter education training before attending a Field Day.

After completing the online coursework, hunters will be able to print out a Field Day Voucher as proof of online course completion. The Field Day Voucher is good for 365 days. Present it at the start of the in-person Field Day.

3. Take a Home-Study Course with a Field Day

Students choosing the home-study option must pre-register for a Field Day and receive instructor approval for take-home study. Once they receive instructor approval, they will receive a manual to take home to study.

Pick up your manual at least one week before your Field Day, complete all chapter reviews, bring the completed manual with you to the Field Day, and present it to an instructor.

Why Hunter Education Is Important

Before heading out for a hunt in Michigan, it's a smart move to complete a hunter education course. Whether you're preparing for your first hunting season or you've spent years chasing whitetail, turkey, or small game, the course builds essential knowledge and is a valuable refresher on safe, responsible hunting.

Michigan hunter education emphasizes practical, real-world skills hunters rely on in the field, including:

  • Safe and responsible firearm use
  • Sound ethical judgment
  • Making smart choices in real hunting situations

The focus is on applying these skills in realistic scenarios to protect you, your hunting partners, and others. At its core, the training is about making sure every hunter returns home safely after each outing.

In addition to safety basics, the course helps hunters prepare for Michigan's diverse environments, from dense forests to open farmland and wetlands. You'll learn how to plan for changing weather conditions, navigate different types of terrain, and respond effectively in unexpected situations. The program also introduces basic survival skills and highlights the importance of communication and teamwork in the field.

Ultimately, hunter education in Michigan reinforces the responsibility that comes with hunting. It promotes ethical practices, respect for wildlife, and conservation-minded decisions, helping preserve the state's hunting heritage for future generations.

Why are a State-Specific Hunter Education Courses Important?

Many states honor hunter education certifications issued elsewhere, and Michigan typically follows suit. If you've completed an approved course in another state, your certificate will usually be recognized when you plan to hunt in Michigan.

That's especially helpful for traveling hunters or newcomers who don't want to retake a basic safety course to hunt across state lines.

Even so, if you're getting ready for your first season in Michigan, it can be worthwhile to take a state-specific course. Michigan has its own regulations, hunting seasons, and habitat types, and a localized course can help you better understand what to expect.

For example, an out-of-state class may not go into detail about Michigan's deer license structure, tagging and reporting requirements, or rules that vary between the Lower and Upper Peninsulas. These are important details, whether you're hunting whitetail in the woods or heading out for small game.

Before relying only on a certification from another state, consider taking a Michigan-focused hunter education course. It's a practical way to get familiar with local laws, stay safe in the field, and hunt responsibly while making the most of Michigan's diverse hunting opportunities.
