How Do I Get My Hunter Education Card in Maine?

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife (MDIFW) offers three ways to meet hunter safety certification requirements.

1. Take a Traditional In-Person Course

Hunters can take an entirely in-person course taught by trained, certified volunteer instructors. This option gives students the opportunity to ask questions and receive additional guidance.

2. Take an Online Course

Hunters age 10 and older can opt to complete part of their hunter safety training online. If you are under 16 years of age, you will also need to complete an in-person Skills and Exam Day.

  • If you are age 16 or older, you'll be able to print your Maine Hunter Education Firearms Card after passing the class.
  • If you are younger than 16, you'll need to print your proof of online course completion and bring it with you to the Skills and Exam Day. You must register for a Skills and Exam Day in advance. Passing the online course does not guarantee you a spot at the Skills and Exam Day.

Hunter-Ed is proud to be an approved online hunter education course for Maine! It's the most convenient way to get your hunter education training.

3. Take a Home-Study Course with a Skills and Exam Day

When registering for the home-study option, you'll choose whether to complete part of the course online or with a workbook.Man and boy wearing blaze orange pose with deer after hunt, Maine hunter education concept.

Why Hunter Education Is Important

Before heading into the woods in Maine, taking a hunter education course is a wise step. Whether you're gearing up for your first hunting season or you've spent years pursuing deer, moose, or upland game, the course provides essential knowledge and serves as a solid refresher on safe, responsible hunting practices.

Hunter education in Maine focuses on practical, field-tested skills that hunters depend on, including:

  • Safe and responsible firearm use
  • Sound ethical judgment
  • Making smart choices in real hunting situations

The goal is to prepare hunters to apply these skills in real-world scenarios, helping protect themselves, their hunting partners, and others. At its core, the training is about ensuring every outing ends safely.

Beyond safety fundamentals, the course also prepares hunters for Maine's varied landscapes, from thick North Woods forests to rugged mountains and remote backcountry areas.

Ultimately, hunter education in Maine reinforces the responsibility that comes with hunting. It encourages ethical behavior, respect for wildlife, and conservation-minded choices, helping sustain the state's strong hunting traditions for generations to come.

Why are a State-Specific Hunter Education Courses Important?

Most states recognize hunter education certifications from other jurisdictions, and Maine generally does the same. If you've completed an approved course in another state or province, your certification will often be accepted when you plan to hunt in Maine.

This can make things much easier for traveling hunters, since you typically won't need to repeat a basic safety course to hunt across state lines.

That said, taking a Maine-specific hunter education course can still be a smart move, especially if you're new to hunting in the state. Maine has its own set of regulations, seasons, and unique environments that may differ from where you originally trained.

For instance, an out-of-state course might not cover Maine's permit system for species like moose, detailed tagging and registration rules, or the challenges of hunting in the vast North Woods. These are important considerations whether you're pursuing deer, bear, or small game.

Even if your existing certification is valid, a course tailored to Maine can help you better understand local laws, prepare for the state's terrain and conditions, and hunt safely and responsibly while getting the most out of your time in the field.
