How to Get Your 2026 Arizona Hunter Education in 3 Easy Steps

How Do I Get My Hunter Education Card in Arizona?
The Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) offers three ways to meet hunter safety certification requirements.
1. Complete an In-Person Course
AZGFD offers classroom instruction led by certified hunter education instructors. Registrants must be at least 9 years old by the class date and must also attend an in-person field day.
2. Take an Online Course
Hunters who are residents of Arizona and 9 years of age or older can opt to complete their hunter safety training online. Arizona does not require an in-person field day for online-only courses.
Hunter-Ed is proud to be an approved online hunter education course for Arizona! It's the most convenient way to get your hunter education training, and you'll be able to print your certificate of completion when finished.
3. Attend an Online + In-Person Field Day Course
If you are not a resident of Arizona, you must take an online + in-person field day course (residents may choose any of the state's course options). In this hybrid course, hunters will first pass the online component, then print a Field Day Qualification Exam Certificate.
The Field Day Qualification Exam Certificate is valid for 90 days, and you must bring it to the field day. Schedule a day and time to complete your certification through one of the state's field skills evaluation sessions. Remember: passing the online course does not guarantee you a spot at a field day.
After finishing the online + in-person field day course, you'll receive your permanent certificate of completion by mail.

Why Hunter Education Is Important
Before heading out to hunt in Arizona's deserts, mountains, or high-country forests, taking a hunter education course is a smart move. Whether you're preparing for your first hunting season or you've spent years chasing mule deer, elk, or javelina, the course builds a solid foundation—and serves as a helpful refresher—on safe and responsible hunting.
Arizona's hunter education program emphasizes practical, in-the-field skills that hunters rely on, including:
- Safe and effective firearm handling
- Ethical decision-making in real hunting scenarios
- Situational awareness and sound judgment in changing conditions
The focus is on applying these skills where they matter most (out in the field) so hunters can make responsible choices that protect themselves and others. At its core, the program is about safety and ensuring every hunt ends without incident.
In addition to the basics, the course prepares hunters for Arizona-specific conditions. You'll learn how to plan for extreme heat, navigate rugged and remote terrain, and stay hydrated in arid environments. The training also covers emergency preparedness, from dealing with heat-related illnesses to handling unexpected situations far from help.
Hunter education in Arizona reinforces the responsibility that comes with spending time outdoors. It promotes ethical hunting practices, respect for wildlife, and a strong conservation mindset, helping preserve the state's hunting heritage for future generations.
