Course Outline

With ring head or circular firing the perimeter of a burn area is ignited in a sequence so that the ensuing fire fronts converge toward the center.

  • Purpose
    • Typically used for large burn units
  • Advantages
    • Can be used in all fuel types
    • Rapid ignition
    • Minimizes control problems along perimeter
    • High fuel consumption
    • Good smoke dispersion
  • Disadvantages
    • Strong convection could result in spot fires
    • Could cause loss of control if wind is not correct or spotting potential extremely high
