Course Outline

Combustion is the accelerated oxidation reaction that requires oxygen in the chemical equation. Oxygen is supplied abundantly in the air around us. If oxygen is removed, such as by placing a jar over a burning candle or a swatter over a flame, the flame goes out. If more oxygen is added, like blowing on a smoldering ember or a strong wind pushing a flame front, fire intensity will increase.
