Course Outline

Every crew member should have a copy of the burn unit map. A hand-drawn map is acceptable, but an aerial photograph will provide more information. The map should show firebreaks and firing sequence, and hazards such as heavy fuels, cisterns and powerlines. Other features to show on the map should include fences, gates and roads; high value avoidance areas (structures, major highways, crop fields, other sensitive areas); and safety considerations (escape routes, safety zones, contingency lines). The map should always have a North arrow and scale.

A burn plan map with the contingency lines marked in red.
