Course Outline

The combined effects of all fire behavior factors determine how a fire will act. These result in visible clues that can be used to judge the fire and determine your actions.

Intensity

In general terms, a more intense fire burns hotter, faster and grows larger.

Rate of spread

The speed at which a fire travels is its rate of spread, usually expressed as chains per hour. Faster rates of spread indicate more intense fires and more serious fire conditions.

Flame length

The distance between the flame tip and base of the flame is the flame length. Longer flames indicate more serious fire conditions and intensity.
