Course Outline

Mop up standards should be addressed in the burn plan. Mop up is to ensure the burn has not crossed control lines and to reduce residual smoke. Special precautions should be taken on burns near other private property or smoke sensitive areas. Extra mop up may be needed to ensure the burn is safe and to reduce smoke near these areas. Usually, grassland burns have little residual smoke while woodland burns frequently have heavy fuels that may smoke for some time and require monitoring for several days. Prescribed burns near major roadways, with islands of unburned fuel, or with burning snags, brush piles or hay bales, may need additional mop up to reduce smoke.
