Fuels

Natural cover fires are fueled by organic plant materials, but many factors affect how well these natural fuels will burn. This affects fire behavior. Fuels vary by the type of material, moisture content, size, distribution and quantity. Because fuel is the only part of the fire environment that can be easily manipulated, it is primarily through the management of fuels that we are able to use and control prescribed fires.

Fuel types

There are four major fuel types and each one has general characteristics that affect fire behavior.

Grass is a very light fuel that changes its flammability quickly, burns fast and intense, and tends to be flashy.
