Course Outline

The requirements for wearing blaze orange depend on what and when you are hunting.

  • When hunting upland game birds—including gray partridge, pheasant, quail, and ruffed grouse—you must wear at least one item that is at least 50% blaze orange. The acceptable items include:
    • Cap
    • Coat
    • Coveralls
    • Hat
    • Jacket
    • Shirt
    • Sweatshirt
    • Vest
  • When hunting deer with a firearm in any season,  you must wear at least one item, other than a hat, that is all blaze orange. The item can be any of the following:
    • Coat
    • Coveralls
    • Jacket
    • Shirt
    • Sweater
    • Sweatshirt
    • Vest
  • When hunting deer using a blind during regular shotgun deer seasons:
    • You must place at least 144 total square inches of blaze orange material on the blind. The orange material must be visible in all directions.
    • You also must meet the blaze orange clothing requirements for hunting deer with a firearm.
