Official Washington Hunter Safety Course and Hunting License Test

Welcome to the official home study online hunter education course of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Washington State law requires all individuals born after January 1, 1972, to show proof of basic hunter education training before purchasing a hunting license. There is currently no minimum age to purchase a hunting license in Washington State.

  • Read all the steps on the next page. Many students fail to read all of the requirements and are very disappointed when they are told they will not get to hunt this year.
  • Locate an evaluation session to attend. Successful completion of the online education program requires all students (including military) to attend a classroom/range evaluation session with a certified instructor. Details are on the next page.
  • Be familiar with all types of firearm actions and all online study material before the evaluation session. Students (except military) must demonstrate firearms handling and firearms skills.

Online education is neither easier nor faster than a traditional hunter education course. Be prepared to study hard and practice the firearm handling skills necessary to be a safe Washington hunter. Remember that firearm safety is up to you.
