Who Needs Hunter Education?

Get your Texas Hunter Education Certificate in 3 steps.

  1. Study the Online Course Material

    Study the free online course material to provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to learn to be a safe and responsible hunter in Texas. You’ll pay a $24.50 course fee after successfully completing the course.

    For hunters ages 17 and up, there is an additional $5.00 charge for the Hunter Education Certificate, collected on behalf of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

    Important You must be at least 9 years old to take the online course.

  2. Complete Age-Dependent Certification Requirements

    If you are 17 years of age or older, once you’ve completed all the units in the course, you’ll take the Hunter Education Certification Exam. Passing the Hunter Education Certification Exam will complete your Texas Parks and Wildlife Department hunter education requirement.

    If you are 9 to 16 years of age, to complete the Texas hunter education requirements, you must pass both the online and Field Day portions of the hunter education course. Learn more about the Field Day.

  3. Receive Your Texas Hunter Education Certificate

    If you are 17 years of age or older, after passing the final exam, you’ll immediately print out your Temporary Hunter Education Certificate (valid for 90 days). Your permanent Hunter Education Certificate will be mailed to you in 3–4 weeks by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

    If you are 9 to 16 years of age, after passing the unit quizzes, you’ll immediately print out your Field Day Voucher. After successful completion of the required Field Day, which includes safe firearm techniques and participation in a live-fire exercise, you will receive a “Temporary Student Card” issued by the instructor. Your permanent Hunter Education Certificate will be mailed to you in 3–4 weeks by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Studying and Completing the Online Course

Study the Course Content

This official training program is developed to meet the standards for hunter training established by the International Hunter Education Association (IHEA-USA).

Read each unit. The units are organized to form building blocks of information. Each unit will help you understand the information in the next units.

This official training program will provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to be a safe and responsible hunter in Texas.

Pass the Course, Ages 17+

If you are 17 years of age or older, you’ll be given the opportunity to demonstrate how well you’re understanding the hunter safety topics by taking a quiz at the end of each unit. You’ll need to score 60% or greater on the unit quiz before moving on to the next unit. If you don’t pass a unit quiz, that’s no problem. You’ll just go back and take the quiz as many times as you need to pass it.

After completing all units quizzes, you’ll have the choice to proceed directly to the online Hunter Education Certification Exam, or you may first take a practice exam. You must score 75% or greater on the Hunter Education Certification Exam to pass. If you fail the final exam, don’t worry. You have unlimited attempts to pass.

Pass the Course, Ages 9–16

If you are 9 to 16 years of age, you’ll be given the opportunity to demonstrate how well you’re understanding the hunter safety topics by taking a quiz at the end of each unit.

You’ll need to score 80% or greater on the unit quiz before moving on to the next unit. If you don’t pass a unit quiz, that’s no problem. You’ll just go back and take the quiz as many times as you need to pass it.

Those ages 9 to 16 must attend the Texas Field Day after passing the online quizzes.

After Passing the Online Course…

If you are 9 to 16 years of age: After passing the online course, you are required to attend the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Field Day to complete your hunter education certification.
