Prohibited Areas
- Trapping is not allowed within 1,000 feet of occupied dwellings (e.g., homes, cabins) without written permission from the landowner or occupant.
- Trapping is prohibited in national parks (e.g., Yellowstone, Glacier). The Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission has, by rule, closed all lands within the boundaries of Montana’s Indian Reservations to the hunting of wolves to non-tribal members.
- Regardless of whether the land is posted or not, a person may not hunt or trap on private property without first obtaining permission of the landowner, the lessee, or their agents.
- Certain Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) or other FWP sites may have additional restrictions; trappers must check site-specific rules.
