Course Outline

Bag limits define the maximum number of wolves an individual may legally harvest in a season, helping ensure sustainable wolf populations

  • A person can take up to 30 wolves with no more than 15 via hunting (maximum 5 in Regions 1 or 2) and no more than 15 via trapping (maximum 5 in Regions 1 or 2). For hunting, a separate license is required for each wolf. For trapping, only a Trapping License is required.
  • All harvested wolves must be removed from the field.
  • Hunters and trappers must report their wolf harvest within 24 hours. The hide and skull must be presented to FWP for inspection within 10 days of harvest. At inspection, mandatory sampling will be collected, including tissue and tooth extraction.
  • If the trapper does not wish to retain the hide and skull, they may leave them with FWP for disposal after inspection.
  • Wolves are excluded from being considered as “suitable for food.” The wolf carcass may be taken in possession or be left in the field (with pelt) as per Montana law.
