Course Outline

  • Traps and snares must be equipped with breakaway mechanisms to release non-target species, particularly protected species like lynx or large game animals like elk or moose.
  • Trappers must report incidental captures of domestic dogs or any animal that cannot be lawfully trapped or snared to FWP within 24 hours.
  • Any such animal that is uninjured must be released prior to the trapper leaving the trap site. If unable to safely release the animal, call FWP. Exception: Any such animal that is injured or dead must promptly (with little or no delay) be reported to FWP to determine disposition and/or collection of the animal.
  • Traps should be set in wolf-specific areas (e.g., game trails used by wolves) to avoid non-target species like deer or mountain lions.
