Monitoring and Research
FWP uses a variety of tools to monitor wolf populations, including data from trapper and hunter harvest reports, trail cameras, winter track surveys, ground-based field surveys, and deer/elk hunter observations via iPOM. This data-driven approach allows FWP to assess the impact of trapping and adjust regulations annually when necessary, ensuring that trapping remains sustainable and does not jeopardize species viability.
There is mandatory reporting and sampling for all harvested wolves. Harvest data collected from trappers contributes directly to FWP's population monitoring efforts, making each trapper an important part of the scientific process.
If a trapper does not wish to harvest a captured wolf, they may contact FWP to coordinate collaring and release of the animal.
