On screen: How to Report a Natural Resource Crime

Aaron Berg, Game Warden Sergeant: I’ve been a game warden for a little over 20 years, and one of the common questions we get is, how do we report wildlife and/or natural resource crimes? One of the ways to do that is being a good witness. And how do you be a good witness? You be a good witness by documenting the crime itself if at all possible.

Documenting vehicle descriptions: make, model, color, direction of travel. Suspect information: if you know a name, that would be very helpful; if you don’t have a name, at least clothing type, color, what were they wearing, maybe approximate ages, how many people were there.

One of the best ways to do this is with a cell phone. Most of us carry cell phones these days. You can take photographs and videos, but make sure and do it from a safe distance.

And lastly, we want you to report it as quickly as possible. It’s really important to report those things as fast as you can because the longer a lot of these things drag on, the harder it is to make the case and sometimes maybe not make it at all. So, if you can report that as soon as you can, that is really super helpful for us in making these cases and solving these crimes.
