Course Outline

Weasels are trapped with longspring foothold traps in a baited cubby set. This set uses a weasel box. The weasel enters the box to get the bait and is caught.

  • Using old or weathered wood, build a weasel box that is 12" to 16" long, 6" wide, and 6" high. The box does not need a bottom.
    • About 1½ to 2 inches from the bottom of the box, make a 2-inch hole for the entrance.
    • On the other end, drive a nail into the inside of the box.
  • Locate the box around heavy cover such as in vegetation near a swamp, in a brush pile, under a fence, or along a stone wall.
  • Hang bait from the nail. The best bait is bloody meat.
  • Place a foothold trap inside the box, either under the entrance or under the bait.
  • Chain the trap to the side of the box.
  • Put a board or other cover on top of the box. Weight the top down to keep it in place.
