Using Cable Devices on Land
Cable devices can be used on land to capture beaver or fox.
- Use 11- or 12-gauge wire as a stabilizing wire (or “pigtail”) to hold the cable loop in position to trap the target furbearer.
- Do not set devices on trails used by people, domestic animals, or deer. Instead, place the device in an existing path or trail used by your target furbearer. Ideally, choose a spot where the path narrows. Center the loop in the path.
- Do not use bait or lure with non-powered cable devices. Instead, place the device in an existing path or trail used by your target furbearer. Ideally, choose a spot where the path narrows. Center the loop in the path.
When setting cable devices on land for beaver:
- Make the loop 9" to 10" in diameter to catch the beaver around the body.
- Keep the bottom of the loop 2" to 3" off the ground.
When setting cable devices on land for fox:
- Make the loop 6" to 8" in diameter to catch the fox around the neck.
- Keep the bottom of the loop 6" to 8" off the ground.
