Hunting in Colorado can be an exciting experience, but it also comes with its own unique challenges and difficulties. Unpredictable, fast changing weather; altitude sickness; special regulations; and big game species native to the Rocky Mountains are all part of the Colorado experience. This section will teach you about hunting in this great state. We’ll cover wildlife identification, Colorado-specific laws and regulations, and high altitude survival.

Colorado is home to 10 big game species and dozens of small game species. Knowing the difference between these species is very important, as Colorado big game licenses can only be used to hunt a certain species and often a specific sex of that species. Most small game species have very exact possession and bag limits that must be followed. All too often hunters mistake an elk for a moose or a mule deer for a whitetail deer. Knowing your wildlife will help you be a safe, responsible, and legal hunter.
