Coyotes are another type of furbearer that is found in Colorado that could be confused with an endangered relative—the wolf. Wolves are an endangered species in Colorado and cannot be hunted or trapped. Coyotes are a legal small game species and can be harvested year-round. Similar to lynx, illegally harvesting a wolf can result in significant penalties and fines, including a potential loss of hunting privileges. The image below shows several key differences between a wolf and coyote so you can be sure that you are harvesting a legal species in the field.
