Maine’s Bear Trapping Laws

To legally trap bear in Maine:

• An individual must be at least 10 years old to trap a bear.
• A bear trapping permit and a trapping or hunting license are required to set a trap for a bear.
• To purchase a bear trapping permit and set a trap for a bear, one of the following are required:
  1. Must have previously held a bear trapping permit in Maine, or
  2. Must have previously taken a trapping education course in Maine, or
  3. Must take MDIFW’s bear trapping course, or
  4. Must be under the direct supervision and in visual and voice contact of their licensed Maine hunting guide, who has completed the on-line course.
