If you are going to hunt elk, knowing what is a legal bull is very important. Elk have a unique set of rules for the majority of our GMUs that we want to discuss. The GMUs where these rules apply can change year to year, so be sure to check the big game brochure before you hunt to see if you must obey these rules or not. In order for a bull to be considered legal in most GMUs, it has to meet one of the following criteria.

  • At least 4 points on one antler
  • A brow tine at least 5" long

If your elk can meet either of these criteria, you have a legal bull.

For pronghorn, deer, and moose, the magic number to remember is 5". Any of those species with antlers/horns that are at least 5" long are considered antlered and can be taken with an antlered license.
