Trapper setting up a trap

An important part of preparing for the trapping season is learning to set and release traps safely.

  • It is best to work with your instructor, mentor, or an experienced trapper to learn how to operate traps safely.
  • On the trapline, you will be wearing gloves for warmth and to keep human odor off your traps. Practice setting traps with the same gloves you will use in the field.
  • To release traps, reverse the setting process. Keep fingers and hands outside the jaw openings.
