Course Outline

  • Never move another trapper’s sets. In Ohio, it is against the law to disturb another trapper’s sets or take another trapper’s catch. Even if you are trying to help, you actually may be hurting the other trapper’s chances.
  • Go out of your way to avoid another trapper’s sets. Any human scent you leave could discourage furbearers from approaching their sets.
  • Respect another trapper’s territory. Do not set a trap where someone already has a trapline. Your extra trapping activity may reduce the likelihood of success for both of you. It also would be poor sportsmanship.
  • Teach new trappers. Join a state and/or national trapping group, both to learn from others and to share your knowledge.
  • Follow the Code of Ethics found at the beginning of this chapter. The best way to protect the privilege to trap is to maintain a good public image by following your code of ethics at all times.
