Sporting Arm Options for Saddle Hunting
Saddle hunting is most commonly done with a bow, but crossbows or rifles can also be used. There are different considerations for using either a bow, a crossbow, or a rifle in the saddle.
- Bow: Bows are popularly used in elevated hunting because they provide more close-range possibilities for shooting from above without being detected by game animals. Bow shooting is much quieter than rifle firing, but it also requires more skill to properly aim and shoot.
- Crossbow: Crossbows used for saddle hunting should be compact and lightweight to improve maneuverability. Choose a platform with enough space to shift your stance and adjust your tether and bridge for optimal shooting mobility. With proper preparation and positioning, saddle hunting with a crossbow offers stealth, flexibility, and a lethal edge in the white-tailed woods.
- Rifle: If using a rifle to hunt, the firearm can be braced against the tree you are tethered to for support while shooting. You should practice leaning against the tree on the side that feels most comfortable for handling your firearm. One benefit of using a rifle in a hunting saddle is having greater range to shoot at game from the tree than bows can provide.
