Like any outdoor activity, trapping has its risks. Safe habits can help minimize these risks.
Hypothermia occurs when you lose body heat too quickly and your core body temperature drops. Wind, water, and cold temperatures can all contribute to loss of body heat. Hypothermia is often induced by cold, wet conditions, such as rain, snow, sleet, or immersion in water.
Signs of hypothermia include uncontrolled shivering, memory loss, and ultimately unconsciousness. Shivering is one of the first signs. If you start to shiver, go to a warm place, put on warmer clothes, or build a fire.
To prevent hypothermia:
- Wear warm clothing. Wool is a good choice because it insulates even when wet.
- When trapping in water, use hip boots or waders and long rubber gloves. If you get wet, change into dry clothes as soon as possible.
