Do I Need Hunter Education in Texas?

In Texas, hunters born on or after September 2, 1971, must complete hunter education or qualify for an applicable exemption, accompaniment option, or Hunter Education Deferral. Hunters 17 and older can complete their certification fully online, while hunters ages 9–16 using the online certification path must complete the online course and required Field Course.

How do I get a Texas Hunter Education Certificate?

Who needs hunter education in Texas?

Hunters born on or after September 2, 1971, must complete hunter education or meet an applicable Texas accompaniment or deferral requirement. This applies to Texas residents and out-of-state hunters. 

How much does the Texas Hunter-Ed course cost?

The Texas Hunter-Ed online course costs $39.95. Hunters age 17 and older also pay a $5.25 Texas Parks and Wildlife Department fee. 

What is the minimum age for Texas hunter education? 

The minimum age for certification is 9. Hunters ages 9–16 must complete the required in-person Field Course in addition to the online course. 

Is my Hunter Education Certificate the same as a Texas hunting license?

No. Your Hunter Education Certificate proves that you completed the required safety education, but it is not a hunting license. You must still purchase the appropriate Texas hunting license and any required endorsements before hunting. 

How long does the Texas Hunter-Ed course take?

Most students complete the online course in about 3–4 hours. Your progress is saved automatically, so you can complete it in one sitting or come back when it works for you. 

Do I have to live in Texas to take this course? 

No. You do not have to be a Texas resident to take the Texas Hunter-Ed course. 

Is Hunter-Ed approved by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department?

Yes. Hunter-Ed is an approved online hunter education provider for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. 

What happens if I fail a quiz or an exam?

You can retake course quizzes until you pass. Hunters 17 and older must score at least 60% on unit quizzes, while hunters under 17 must score at least 80%. The online Hunter Education Certification Exam for hunters 17 and older requires at least 75%, with unlimited attempts. 

Do I have to take a final exam? 

Hunters 17 and older take the Hunter Education Certification Exam at the end of the online course and must score at least 75%. Hunters ages 9–16 complete their certification through the required Field Course, which includes a final exam. 

What do I receive after completing the online course?

After successfully completing the online course, you can access proof of online completion. Hunters ages 9–16 will need this proof when completing their required Field Course. 

When will I receive my permanent Texas Hunter Education Certificate?

For online-only certification, your course information is sent to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department after completion. TPWD will email you a link to access your permanent certificate once it is available. If you have not received it after about a month, you can check your certification directly through TPWD. 

Does my Texas Hunter Education Certificate expire? 

No. Your Texas Hunter Education Certificate is valid for life. 

Will my Texas Hunter Education Certificate be accepted in other states?

Yes. All states and provinces requiring hunter education recognize your Texas certification. Likewise, Texas recognizes Hunter Education certificates from all other states and provinces. This is known as reciprocity.
