Use eye and ear protection. Assume a stable position. Grip the handgun with both hands. Do not cross the thumb of the supporting hand behind the slide of a semi-automatic.

Two-hand handgun stance

Position and Grip: All handguns should be fired at arm’s length. Use a two-handed hold whenever possible.

  • Hold the handgun high on the grip so that the recoil is directed back to the hand and arm in a straight line.
  • Do not put the thumb of your non-firing hand on top of your firing hand. As the slide travels rearward, the bottom of the slide can cut your thumb.

Aiming a handgun

Sight Alignment: Aligning the sights on a handgun is similar to firing a rifle. Proper alignment is more important due to the shorter distance between the sights.
