Online Hunter Education Home Study Steps
- Study the Washington hunter education course material.

- Take the Certification
Exam for $15, collected online. A score
of 80% is required for passing the exam.
- Upon passing the Certification Exam, print out
your official Washington Hunter Exam Certificate.
- Download and complete the Affidavit
of Online Certification in PDF format, attach a copy
of your Washington Hunter Exam Certificate, and give both forms to the hunter education instructor upon arrival at the classroom/range evaluation session for which you have pre-registered. Please note that your affidavit of online certification must be notarized. Follow the instructions on the form carefully.
- If you are claiming the U.S. military exemption from skills training, you must bring your valid United States military identification card or a Form DD 214 to your classroom/range evaluation session. The instructor will confirm that you are exempt from the skill training requirement.
Classroom/Range Evaluation Session Steps
- Pre-register for a Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife home study classroom/range evaluation session.
- Students must download and print the classroom/range skills evaluation form, complete the student information section, and provide the form to a hunter education instructor upon arrival at the classroom/range evaluation session. Download and print out the Classroom and Range Skills Evaluation form now.
- If you are claiming the U.S. military exemption from skills training, you must bring your valid United States military identification card or a Form DD 214. Military personnel must attend the sportsmanship and conservation portions of hte classroom evaluation. They are exempt ONLY from the firearm skills portion of the course.
- Students must achieve an 80% score or higher on a 15-question hunter education quiz administered at the beginning of the classroom/range evaluation session.
- Students who fail the 15-question quiz, the skills evaluation or the attitude portion of the evaluation are permanently disqualified from the online hunter education program and MUST enroll in a traditional hunter education course.
- Students must successfully demonstrate firearms handling skills during classroom, live-fire, and field course exercises—at ALL times. Muzzle control is the most important factor being evaluated.
Individuals who have a previous Washington hunting license
or a valid Washington hunter education training certificate
need only show these documents to a license vendor in order
to purchase a new, hunting license. Individuals who have
successfully completed hunter education training in other
states need only show their out-of-state hunter education
certificate at the time of license purchase. Please note
that an out-of-state license is not the same as a
hunter education certificate.
