Official Washington Hunter Education Course

Online Hunter Education Home Study Steps

  1. Study the Washington Hunter material in each chapter and then complete the chapter review questions. Re-study any material you may have answered incorrectly.
  2. When you have studied all the material, take the Practice Test as many times as you like—free of charge—to ensure you've mastered the course material. A different set of questions is presented each time you take the Practice Test.
  3. Take the Certification Exam. There is a $15 fee for the Certification Exam, which is collected whether you pass or fail. A score of 80% is required for passing the exam.
  4. Upon passing the Certification Exam, you can print out your official Washington Hunter Exam Certificate.
  5. Download and complete the Affidavit of Online Certification in PDF format, attach a copy of your Washington Hunter Exam Certificate, and give both forms to the hunter education instructor upon arrival at the classroom/range evaluation session for which you have pre-registered. Please note that your affidavit of online certification must be notarized. Follow the instructions on the form carefully.

Classroom/Range Evaluation Session Steps

  1. Pre-register for a Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife home study classroom/range evaluation session.
  2. Students must download and print the classroom/range skills evaluation form, complete the student information section, and provide the form to a hunter education instructor upon arrival at the classroom/range evaluation session. Download and print out the Classroom and Range Skills Evaluation form now.
  3. Students must achieve an 80% score or higher on a 15-question hunter education quiz administered at the beginning of the classroom/range evaluation session.
  4. Students must successfully demonstrate firearms handling skills during classroom, live-fire, and field course exercises—at ALL times. Muzzle control is the most important factor being evaluated.

Individuals who have a previous Washington hunting license or a valid Washington hunter education training certificate need only show these documents to a license vendor in order to purchase a new, hunting license. Individuals who have successfully completed hunter education training in other states need only show their out-of-state hunter education certificate at the time of license purchase. Please note that an out-of-state license is not the same as a hunter education certificate.
