4.4 Handgun Actions

There are four common types of handgun actions:

Break-Action Pistol

  • These are specialized firearms. The break-action pistol is very similar to the break-action rifle or shotgun.
  • These guns often shoot pistol, rifle, or shot cartridges.
  • Break-action pistols may have a safety.

Bolt-Action Handgun

  • These guns are also specialized, (usually) single-shot firearms. The bolt-action handgun is very similar to the bolt-action rifle or shotgun.
  • These guns may shoot rifle cartridges.
  • Bolt-action handguns may have a safety.

Handguns also generally have short barrels. Because of these lighter, shorter barrels, it is more difficult to maintain safe control of a handgun than it is with a shotgun or rifle with a longer barrel. Be extremely careful when handling handguns!
