2.13 Safeties

The job of the safety is to prevent a firearm from firing. When the safety is "on",”the gun should not be able to fire. When the safety is "off",”the gun is ready to fire.

The safety is located in different places on different rifles. Also, the safety moves in different directions for the "on" position with different firearms. Be sure you know the location of the safety and how it works on your rifle! Use the safety at all times.

Use your safety...but remember that some guns have been fired accidentally even with the safety on! Never test your safety with a loaded gun.

The safety is not a substitute for common sense! You are the only one who can really keep a rifle, shotgun, or handgun safe. Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction at all times. Keep your fingers away from the trigger until you are ready to shoot. Keep the chamber empty until you are ready to shoot. You are the best safety!

Remember

Safeties are mechanical devices that can fail. You are the best safety that any firearm can have.
