Texas Hunter Education Course
About the Course and Hunting License Requirements

Welcome to one of the official online hunting education courses developed for the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department. This course uses the exact hunter education material taught in TPWD's classroom courses. Under Texas hunting law, every hunter (including out-of-state hunters) born on or after September 2, 1971, must successfully complete a Hunter Education Training Course. The minimum age for certification is 9 years. A hunting license and proof of certification is required to be on your person while hunting. Note: Certification is not required to purchase a license.

Texas accepts an independent study method that involves a two-part process:

Study at home then take $15 online exam Study at home—on your own schedule and at your own pace—then take an online exam. Upon passing, you will receive a Field Day Qualifier Certificate. This Field Day Qualifier Certificate grants you entrance into the final portion of your hunter education training, which takes place with a certified instructor at a Home Study / Skills Trail Testing Site.
Additional $15 for Field Day, where you will complete the certification process Field Day instruction and testing led by certified hunter education volunteer instructors. Please call 1-800-792-1112, Ext. 4999 or visit the Texas Parks & Wildlife Hunter Education web page to learn about Field Day (Home Study / Skills Trail Testing) options in your area. Field Day options are limited, so please ensure that one is offered in your area before continuing the online certification process. There is an additional $15 state fee for the Field Day.

Online Hunter Education Home Study Steps

  1. Study the Texas hunter education course material. The minimum age to be certified with this online course is age 9.
  2. Take one or more Practice Tests as many times as you like—free of charge—to ensure you've mastered the course material.
  3. Take the Texas Field Day Qualifier Exam for $15, collected online. A score of 80% is required for passing the exam.
  4. Upon passing the online exam, you can print out your Texas Field Day Qualifier Certificate, which is accepted by the state as proof of home study completion. You must present it to the instructor to gain entrance at the required field day activities.
  5. Call 1-800-792-1112, Ext. 4999 or visit the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Hunter Education web page to learn about Field Day (Home Study / Skills Trail Testing) options in your area. Note:  There is an additional $15 fee associated with the Field Day testing.
  6. After successful completion of the Field Day (Home Study / Skills Trail Testing) portion, including a written exam requiring a passing score of 80%, you will receive a “Temporary Student Card” issued by the instructor.  Your official certification card will arrive in the mail, so please retain and protect your “Temporary Student Card” until that time.
