Taking the Texas Hunter’s Ed Course

What is the minimum age to obtain the Hunter Education Certificate?
You must be at least 9 years of age to take the online Texas Hunter’s Ed Course.
How long will it take to complete the course?
It typically takes 4–6 hours to go through the online course, excluding quizzes/tests, and any re-studying that you may choose to do.
Do I have to complete the online course all at once?
You may complete the course at your own pace. The course can be completed in one sitting or completed a little at a time over several days.

Course Authority, Recognition, and State Acceptance

Is this course approved by the state of Texas?
This course is approved by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
Is my Hunter Education Certificate accepted in other states?
All states and provinces that have mandatory hunter education requirements will accept Texas hunter education certifications. Likewise, Texas will accept hunter education certifications that are issued by other states and provinces that meet official IHEA-USA requirements. (This is known as “reciprocity.”)

Taking the Texas Hunter’s Ed Course, if You Are 17 Years of Age or Older

How much does the online hunter safety course cost? How much does the Hunter Education Certificate cost?

The online course fee is $29.50. There is an additional $5.00 charge for the Hunter Education Certificate, collected on behalf of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

I failed a unit quiz. Have I failed the course?
You must score at least 60% on the unit quizzes to pass. If you fail, you will be required to repeat the quiz.
What is the Texas Hunter Education Certification Exam?
The Texas Hunter Education Certification Exam is the final exam you take at the end of the course. After reviewing all units, you must take and pass the Texas Hunter Education Certification Exam covering all the course material. You must score at least 75% on the Texas Hunter Education Certification Exam to pass. You have unlimited attempts to pass the Texas Hunter Education Certification Exam.
What if I fail the Hunter Education Certification Exam?
You must score at least 75% on the Hunter Education Certification Exam to pass. If you should fail the Texas Hunter Education Certification Exam, you may immediately take it again.
Do I have to complete the Texas Hunter Education Certification Exam in one session?
No, you can log out without completing the exam. When you log in later, you will be taken to the first unanswered question of the exam.

What is the Temporary Hunter Education Certificate?
The online course certificate is also your Temporary Hunter Education Certificate. After completing the course by passing and paying the course fee, you may instantly print out a Temporary Hunter Education Certificate, which is valid for 90 days.
What is the Hunter Education Certificate?
The Hunter Education Certificate is proof that you have successfully completed all the hunter education requirements and can purchase a license to legally hunt in the state of Texas. Your permanent Texas Hunter Education Certificate will be mailed to you in 3–4 weeks by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

You do not have to take an online final exam. You must pass only the unit quizzes. After passing the quizzes and paying for your online course, you must locate and sign up for the required Field Day to complete your Texas hunter education requirements and receive your Hunter Education Certificate.

About the Hunter Education Certificate

What is the Field Day Voucher?
The online course certificate is also your Field Day Voucher. After completing the course by passing the quizzes and paying the course fee, you may instantly print out an Texas Field Day Voucher, which is valid for 365 days. You can print the Field Day Voucher right then, and/or request that a PDF of the voucher be e-mailed to you. This online course certificate will allow you to be admitted to a Field Day provided by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
What is the Hunter Education Certificate?
The Hunter Education Certificate is proof that you have successfully completed all the hunter education requirements and can legally hunt in the state of Texas. You will receive the Hunter Education Certificate from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department after successfully completing the Field Day.

Getting the Certificate

What is the Field Day?

At the Field Day, you must complete a hunter skills trail and a live-fire exercise; attend a presentation on ethics, responsibility, and game laws; and pass a written exam. The Field Day requires an additional $15 payment, payable by cash or money order. This fee is collected by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and the fee applies to all students who took an Internet course.

How do I attend a Field Day?

How do I get the hunter education card issued by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department?
After successful completion of the Field Day, you will receive a “Temporary Student Card” issued by the instructor. Your official Hunter Education Certificate will be mailed to you in 3–4 weeks, so please retain and protect your “Temporary Student Card” until that time.

Username and Password

How do I choose a username?

Sometimes, it can be difficult to find a username that has not already been taken by someone else taking the same course.

Try to pick something that is easy to remember but is also unique. One trick is to use a variation of your name that is easy for you to remember but difficult for others to associate with your name. For instance, you could use your middle name and spell it backward. Another way to find a unique username that is easy to remember is to compound your name with a favorite hobby, food, TV show, movie, or a character from a movie or TV show.

I need to change my username and/or password. Where do I do this?
If you need to update your profile information or change your password, click on the View Profile link under your username in the navigation bar at the top of any web page in the course. Re-submit your revised information using the form provided.
I forgot my password. How do I reset it?

If you forget your password, you can reset it from the Forgot Your Password? page. You will need to enter your username and the e-mail from your profile, and an e-mail containing the link to reset your password will be sent.

Logging In/Out

Do I have to complete the online course all at once?
You may complete the course at your own pace. The course can be completed in one sitting or completed a little at a time over several days.
I am afraid to log out of the course, but I don’t have all day to take it. Will I lose everything if I log out?
No, when you log out, your progress is recorded so that when you log in again, you can pick up where you left off. When logging back in, you will be taken to the Course Contents page where you can see the progress you have made. You can click on a link for the last page viewed to go back to that part of the course.
How many times may I log in and out?
You may log in and out as many times as you wish. Your progress is monitored and saved.

Troubleshooting

What does the message “Your session has expired due to inactivity” mean?
If you have not been active within the course for more than 15 minutes, you will automatically be logged out of your session. A notice stating, “Your session has expired due to inactivity.” will appear at the top of the course on a yellow background. Log back in, and you can continue interacting with the course. Your progress will have been recorded, and you should be able to continue where you left off in the course.
What happens if I get disconnected from the Internet while taking the course?
If you are disconnected from the Internet, simply log back in and pick up where you left off. Your progress in the course will be saved.
Why aren’t the animations or videos displaying?
If you are unable to view the animations or videos, make sure that Adobe Flash Player is installed on your system.
