Fall-Arrest Systems (FAS)

You should use a fall-arrest system (FAS) that is manufactured to TMA standards. Carefully read the manufacturer’s instructions for proper use of your FAS and follow all safety guidelines.

Always use a properly fitting FAS that includes a full-body harness while climbing a tree, installing an elevated platform or a tree stand, and hunting from a tree stand. Five-point or full-body harnesses, which are commonly used in construction, are recommended because they provide security and comfort in a fall, and they distribute a hunter’s weight evenly. The vest harness is a very effective style of the full-body harness.

Single-strap belts and chest harnesses are no longer considered acceptable means of fall arrest.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your FAS plus these safety guidelines.

  • Attach the tree-strap portion of the FAS so that you drop less than a foot if you fall.
  • When climbing into or out of a tree stand, always use three points of contact with your arms and legs.
  • Keep a firm hold on the tree as you enter or leave a platform, and don’t let go until you’re certain you are secure.
  • Discard any FAS that shows signs of wear and tear and adhere to the expiration date sewn into the FAS by the manufacturer.
Remember

Most tree stand falls occur when a hunter is climbing up or down a tree. Be sure to use a fall-arrest system at all times when your feet are off the ground.
