Steps to Earn Your Hunter Education Certificate

Step 1 - Online Course and Exam

  • This independent study course is for students age 18 and older.
  • Study the Montana hunter education course material.
  • Take the Montana Field Day Qualifier Exam for $15, collected whether you pass or fail.
  • Upon passing, receive your Field Day Qualifier Exam Certificate.

Step 2 - Field Day Requirement

Field Day Scheduling

Montana FWP generally offers field days in the spring, summer, and early fall. It is unlikely that there will be field days offered leading up to and during the general hunting season. There may be limited field day offerings beginning in January, however most field days will take place April through September.

Students should check for available field days before completing the course and plan ahead to complete certification requirements in plenty of time before planned hunts.

Remember you may not register for a Field Day until after you pass the Field Day Qualifier Exam. Keep in mind that Field Days with current openings may fill up before you complete your course and exam. Your Field Day Qualifier Certificate is good for 365 days.
