Steps to Earn Your Hunter Education Certificate
Step 1 - Online Course and Exam
- This independent study course is for students age 18 and older.
- Study the Montana hunter education course material.
- Take the Montana
Field Day Qualifier Exam for $15, collected whether you pass or fail.
- Upon passing, receive your
Field Day Qualifier Exam Certificate.
Step 2 - Field Day Requirement
Born on or prior to January 1, 1985?
- A Field Day is optional for your age group.
- Follow the directions on your Field Day Qualifier Exam Certificate to receive your permanent certificate from Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks.

Born after January 1, 1985?
- Before exiting the online exam, you MUST create your Field Day registration account.
- Using your account, you can register for a Field Day, or modify or cancel an existing registration.
- Bring your Field Day Qualifier Exam Certificate to your Field Day.
- Your Field Day will include:
- Several hours of review
- A hands-on demonstration test
- A written multiple choice test (given at the discretion of the instructor)

You can see a list of Field Days before taking the course. However, you may not register for a Field Day until after you pass the Field Day Qualifier Exam. Keep in mind that Field Days with current openings may fill up before you complete your course and exam. Your Field Day Qualifier Certificate is good for 365 days.
