Official Missouri Hunting Safety Course Link to Missouri Department of Conservation

Hello, hunter! Missouri's online hunting course has moved. Click here to go to the latest version of the Today's Hunter in Missouri course—the official hunting safety course of the Missouri Department of Conservation.

The following course material is for reference only. Please go to the new course to complete your Missouri certification.

Fall-Arrest Systems (FAS)

The Missouri Department of Conservation recommends using a fall-arrest system (FAS) that is manufactured to TMA standards. A simple belt device actually can cause injuries by focusing the force of the fall on a relatively small area of the body. Belts have broken ribs and caused internal injuries to organs such as the diaphragm, liver, spleen, or lungs. In other cases, the weight of a person suspended in a three-inch belt has constricted the diaphragm, asphyxiating the hunter within minutes. Single-strap belts and chest harnesses are no longer considered acceptable means of fall arrest.

  • Carefully read the manufacturer’s instructions for proper use of your fall-arrest system, and follow all safety guidelines. (Notify the manufacturer if the instructions are missing or confusing.)
  • Always use a properly fitting FAS that includes a full-body harness while climbing a tree, installing an elevated platform or a tree stand, and hunting from a tree stand.
  • Only use a FAS rated for your full body weight including clothing and any worn gear.
  • Make sure your FAS includes these three components:
    • A full-body harness
    • A lineman's-style belt
    • A tree-tethering system (treestrap and tether)
  • Fasten the treestrap and the tether included on the FAS to the tree according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The treestrap and the tether should be attached so that you drop less than a foot if you fall and also so that your feet cannot drop below a level that would prevent you from climbing back on the platform.
  • Remain attached to the tree from the time you leave the ground until you get back down.
  • Discard fall-arrest systems that show signs of wear and tear, and adhere to the expiration date sewn into the FAS by the manufacturer.

Treestand Manufacturer’s Association (TMA)

The Treestand Manufacturer’s Association (TMA) is a nonprofit corporation consisting of elevated stand manufacturers and related equipment manufacturers. TMA’s mission is to promote tree stand safety by establishing product manufacturing standards. More information may be obtained by visiting their website at: www.tmastands.com.

Remember

Most tree stand falls occur when a hunter is climbing up or down a tree. Be sure to wear a fall-arrest system at all times when your feet are off the ground.
