With a lever action, a large metal lever, located behind the trigger, is pushed down and away, exposing the chamber for one round to be loaded. It is ready to fire after you close the lever. Most models have exposed hammers that can be dangerous and hard for young hands to operate safely. A fixed, tubular magazine on most lever-action firearms makes it difficult to determine if the gun is unloaded. Always use extra caution to keep your hands away from the trigger while working the lever action.
