The half-cock (hammer) safety is common on firearms with exposed hammers. It is not a true safety although it sometimes is described as a mechanical safety device by firearm manufacturers. The hammer is positioned in the half-cock notch and away from the firing pin. This “safety” is engaged by pulling the hammer to half-cock or by carefully releasing a fully cocked hammer down to the half-cocked position with the trigger released. Some firearms automatically rebound to the half-cock position after the trigger is released.
