About the Course and Hunting License Requirements

In most states, hunters can not hunt legally unless they have had some type of formal education in the proper handling of firearms. California requires hunter education training for all persons who have not formerly held a California hunting license, who do not have a hunter education certificate of completion, or who do not have a current, valid, hunting license from another state or province.

Online Hunter Education Home Study Steps

1. Study the online California hunter safety course.
2. Take the Pre-Certification Exam. Pay $19.50—one time only, after you pass.
3. Print your California Pre-Certification Exam Voucher, which is accepted by the state as proof of home study.
4. Sign up for a four-hour class led by a certified instructor. You will review significant course material, take a written examination, and upon passing the examination, receive proof of completing your hunter education course.
