Reviewing the Parts of the Muzzleloader
The three basic parts of the muzzleloader are the lock, stock, and barrel. Other parts included on some guns are a set trigger, a sight, and a safety.

Lock
The lock on a muzzleloader is made up of parts that ignite a charge, causing the projectile to be ejected.
Flintlock Muzzleloader: The flintlock muzzleloader evolved in the late 1600s.
- Flint is secured tightly by the hammer, and pulling the trigger causes the flint to strike the frizzen—the cover of the pan containing the priming powder.
- The striking opens the frizzen and creates sparks.
- The sparks ignite the powder in the pan which in turn ignites the powder in the barrel and causes the gun to fire.
Percussion Lock Muzzleloader: Also known as a caplock, this was an innovation in 19th-century muzzleloader development.
- Fulminate of mercury began to replace gunpowder as a priming agent. This explosive, housed in a metal container known as a percussion cap, ignites the black powder when the hammer strikes the cap.
- The percussion lock is the predecessor of the modern rifle cartridge.

In-Line Muzzleloader: In the in-line muzzleloader, either primer or a percussion cap is placed on the nipple or breech plug. An ignition system that is in direct alignment with the bore of the firearm causes the cap to ignite the black powder charge, and the gun fires.

Stock
The stock serves as the handle of the muzzleloader. It provides a structure to help the shooter aim and fire and also transfers the recoil from firing.
- Forearm: The front part of the stock that extends under the barrel
- Comb: The top of the stock where your cheek rests when aiming
- Wrist: The area the hand grasps to pull the trigger
- Butt: The part that you hold against your shoulder when shooting
Barrel
The barrel is a metal tube through which the projectile travels.
- Bore: The interior of the barrel. The bore may be smooth or rifled.
- Breech: The rear end of the barrel, closed by a part called the breech plug. There are three types of breech plugs:
- Muzzle: The open end of the barrel, where the projectile leaves the gun. In a muzzleloading firearm, the powder charge and projectile are loaded into the muzzle.
